23 things to know before coming to Howard University

1. Your Howard intro

Name + Classification + Major/Minor + Hometown

2. Freshman week

You can not buy the party pack and still enjoy yourself! Live it up freshman year, but it’s also okay to not go out every weekend. If you miss one party trust me next week there will be one just like it!

3. Don’t compare yourself

Everyone’s at the top, just because someone already has an internship and you don’t it’s fine.

4. Cafes/meal plans

Blackburn and Annex are the main cafes. Jazzmans, Punchout, c-stores are all places that only take dining dollars. I recommend the 140 block meal plan.

5. Get involved early, but don’t burn yourself out

Remember to leave time for your academic and most importantly for yourself.

6. Networking and connections are key

However, make them genuine! People can see right through you if you have ill intent.

7. Homecoming is a BIG deal

Prepare for a great weekend 🙂

8. Random turn ups are the norm

Especially in the springtime

9. Sadly, you may struggle in one way or another

Just remember someone before you probably experienced the same challenge and overcame it!

10. Don’t take no for an answer

Take note of everyone you talk to, write down names and number.

11. Bring business attire

You will need business clothes for interviews, some class presentations, etc.

12. Don’t rush making a solid group of friends

Also, it’s okay to have different friends for different things (party, orgs, prayer, cafe, major/classes)

13. Download groupme

Groupme has EVERYTHING!

14. Go to office hours early in the semester

Make those connections early with your professors. For the sake of your grade and recommendation letter

15. Learn how to budget/ save money

I save half of every check I get and budget for each month. Also, take the campus shuttle or use the metro instead of Uber.

16. Celebrities are always on campus

Stay ready, so you don’t have to get ready!

17. You can make your own major

Howard has a cool opportunity where you can make your own major called Interdisciplinary Studies!

18. Look for a mentor or some type of guidance

Howard is a HUGE place with a thousand things going on at once which can seem very overwhelming at first

19. Howard hills are crazy

Prepare your calves

20. Be mindful of your surroundings

Howard is an open campus in the middle of D.C., try not to walk alone and always leave a party with the same number of people you went with.

21. Howard people don’t forget anything

Be mindful of your interactions on Howard twitter and in person

22. Everything is a pop out and it’s okay to not pop out

Be you and be comfortable

23. Don’t overpack

You don’t have to bring your entire life and your parents can mail you things
